As you know, one of the primary reasons Amateur Radio exists is to provide emergency communications support when needed.  Not only does emergency communications help justify the radio spectrum reserved for Amateur Radio it is also one of the main purposes of our 501(c)(3) organization. Please consider working at least one Public Service event per year. Better yet, join the the emergency service organizations and get trained.

Being able to provide effective and efficient emergency communications support requires training.  There are several activities that can help you prepare to be an emergency communicator to include formal training and certification by one of the recognized emergency communication organizations (ARES, RACES, SATERN, etc.), simulated emergency drills and exercises, and non-emergency communications support to public events (e.g., Marathons, parades, etc.).  Providing communications support to public events such as marathons, parades, etc. in and of themselves, do not qualify you as emergency communicator.  Think of these events as an opportunity to build, enhance, and practice your communications skills under real “out in the field” conditions, albeit not a real emergency.

The Anne Arundel Radio Club supports several Public Service Events during the course of each year. The number and type of activities can vary.

Each event has a radio communications coordinator from the Anne Arundel Radio Club.  Click on any of the events listed on the right to learn more about the event, how to volunteer and other useful information.
